First of all, you are not alone! Finding online courses isn’t always easy.

Not talking about university courses alone, but all kinds of classes, programs, webinars, etc. you can attend online and either start learning something new or broaden your understanding of a relatively familiar subject.

As a matter of fact, if you start from scratch and try to find courses without any specific keywords, like the name of a school or the name of a platform, you might not find interesting courses.

13 search words to help you discover more online study options

You’d think that finding the right keywords to use in search engines would be easy. You want to find online courses, right? In reality, those words -online course- don’t give you all the options offered. Here is a list of search words you can use to increase the amount of choices you’ll find:

online course

online class

MOOC (short from Massive Open Online Courses)

lifelong learning

continuous learning

extension school

distance learning

remote learning

open university

adult education

online certificate program

online degree

online associate program

Webinars, as well as podcasts, can also provide the information you need.

As you can see, not all of the search words mentioned above will give you results that are suitable for every situation and for every person. In addition, the list is by no means comprehensive. It is here to simply demonstrate, how versatile search words you should use in order to find all the choices offered.

The search results for online courses may surprise you even after dozens of searches

Sometimes, you find courses by accident. I, for example, was trying to find courses offered by IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). The link to that website is https://www.ibm.com/skills/. However, I ended up finding courses from International Business Management Institute https://www.ibm-institute.com/. I had never heard about this institute before.

On another day, I was searching for information about Oxbridge’s (Oxford + Cambridge) online courses and noticed multiple websites that carry a different version of the name Oxbridge.

It is certainly easy to get confused with all the different organizations offering online courses. To make the search even more difficult, not all of the courses offered by an organization are necessarily found in one place. You would assume that you can find all courses simply searching for “example university online courses”. But no. At the same time, on the other end of the spectrum, same courses are offered on multiple platforms, which also makes it hard to compare the selection.

It may take a while to find the best course for you, but don’t let that stop you! The more you search, the more you’ll find and the easier it gets. Many skills can be learned online, so have fun exploring!
