Write a few words a week, and you have a blogging business.
Take a picture of your morning breakfast, and you have an Instagram business.
Film yourself during a normal school day, and you have a vlogging business.
Building a social media business is simple.

In reality?

Yes, you need to start simple; write, take pictures, vlog, etc. However, that alone will not get you far. I’ve watched countless YouTube videos and read numerous blog posts about the things that nobody tells you about social media businesses. Many of them contain valid information. At the same time, it feels that everybody will tell you the same general facts. One of the most popular comments is that it takes a lot of free hours to build your business, so you shouldn’t expect overnight success. So true! But what are the things that take so much time?

Building a social media business takes time

Building a social media business typically takes time because you need to have content (on your site, channel, or something similar) to keep the audience’s interest for more than a couple of seconds. Most social media influencers will tell you this.

But the thing that takes most of your time is gathering new info, tips, and tricks because you are constantly learning something new.

However, I honestly think that that is also the most rewarding part of the process. But that being said, the process can be exhausting at times!

What are you learning when building a social media business?

It all depends on the platform you choose (and many other aspects of your business), but don’t be surprised if you someday end up reading about

  • Google Analytics versus AWStats
  • What are the ideal image sizes for blogs, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube thumbnails, etc.
  • VAT
  • Sales funnels
  • GDPR
  • IPR
  • Trademarks
  • Meta descriptions
  • Alt texts
  • Intros and outros
  • Brute-force attacks

Problems with time management?

If you ever think that you might be using your time inefficiently, read this post about better time management in this very blog. It was written for online students, but you can definitely implement the steps in a business owner’s day as well.

Mindset is the key when building a social media business

Like I said, learning by doing is rewarding, and building a business will teach you more than you can imagine. However, if you are doing it alone, you might feel lonely at times. Most -if not all- social media business owners doubt their chances of success at some point.

So, above all, when deciding to pursue a career in this field, start with the right mindset. Acknowledge that problems will occur, and the process will take time. Also, make a plan for challenging days so that you know beforehand how you will motivate yourself to keep going.

But as always, have fun learning!
